Southern Clay Products Increases Prices
of Associative Thickeners and Castor Derivative Additives

GONZALES, TX (April 24, 2008) – Effective May 1, 2008 or as contracts allow, Southern Clay Products, Inc. will increase list and off-list prices of:

  • Optiflo® nonionic associative thickeners by an average of three percent
  • castor oil derivatives by $0.10 to $0.25 per pound
  • Y-Products by $0.10 pound
  • Permont® additives by $0.03 per pound, and
  • Newcowel® emulsions by 15 to 22 percent

These increases apply to all regions and are being implemented to help offset continuing increases in raw material and operating costs.

“We are experiencing significant and continuing increases in our key raw materials, including PEG, glycol ethers, aminoplast, castor oil feed stock and xylene chemistries,” explained Mark Zody, SCP market manager for waterborne and castor derivative technologies. “At the same time, our manufacturing and logistics costs also are rising.”

Optiflo associative thickeners are designed for use in waterborne paints, coatings, inks, adhesives, and caulks to provide rheological properties, such as mid-shear (Stormer Viscosity) and high shear (ICI viscosity).

SCP’s castor derivatives are designed for use in solvent-based coatings, caulks and sealants and provide a good balance between sag and leveling along with excellent pigment suspension.

Permont additives for water-based paint and coatings systems are the world’s only liquid smectite rheology agents.

Necowel emulsions for water-based wood and concrete stain application, low VOC alkyd-like chemistry with excellent penetration lapping properties, ideal for semi-transparent deck stains.

Southern Clay Products, Inc., Gonzales, Texas, is a subsidiary of Rockwood Holdings, Inc. and part of its Clay Additives business, which is a leading supplier of smectite-based functional additives to several markets.
